My Puppy Has Diarrhea But Still Active Playing

If you currently have or have ever had a puppy, you already know that you must make sure to keep an eye on them at all times.  You are going to need to make sure that they are healthy and happy at all times of the day.  With that being said however, your puppy is more than likely not going to be the only thing that you have going on in your life, which means that you are not always able to keep track of them and give them all of your attention 24/7.

This is going to be extra important while your dog is a puppy, as they are going to be more than curious and adventurous, exploring everything they come across with their mouth and their snout.  This means that there is always going to be the chance that they can swallow an object that is able to give them a very upset stomach, or even worse, loose stool (which is also referred to as diarrhea).  If this is the case, you may have wondered what it is that you should be doing if your dog is suffering from diarrhea but is still acting playful?

Common Causes of Diarrhea in Puppies

As mentioned previously, your puppy is pretty much always going to be in explore mode when they are in their younger age.  When it comes to your puppy having diarrhea, eating something that they should not have eaten is going to be one of the most common causes of their symptoms.  This is going to be because whatever it was that they ate has more than likely given them a very irritated digestive system, which means that their body is going to do everything in its power to expel whatever it is that they ate through their waste-removal system (also known as diarrhea).

Another one of the main reasons that your dog may be suffering from diarrhea is going to be their diet.  You must keep in mind that your puppy’s young stomach is not going to be very developed, so it may take them a while in order to get their stomach accustomed to their new diet or food.  With that in mind, there is also going to be the possibility that your puppy has developed some type of sensitivity to one or two of the ingredients that their regular food contains.  If you suspect this as the reason your puppy is suffering from diarrhea, you are going to want to try and get them a much higher quality of food.  This should help fix their diarrhea situation if it is related to their daily diet.

Parasites are also going be another common cause of your puppy having diarrhea.  Whether it be from when they were born or from something in the environment where they live, parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, coccidia, giardia, and whipworms are all going to be things that can cause your puppy to have diarrhea.

As if the above-mentioned reasons weren’t enough, there is also the chance that your puppy could catch the viral infection that is better known as parvo.  While this is only going to be a potential concern for puppies that have not had the proper vaccinations, it can still cause your puppy to have diarrhea.  This is because parvo is going to be an infection that will wreak havoc on your puppy’s digestive system, meaning that they are going to be very likely to suffer from diarrhea.

What to do When Your Puppy has Diarrhea but is Still Playful

If you have noticed that your puppy is suffering from diarrhea but is still being very active, there is a very good chance that it is only going to be a mild case.  With that being said, there is a very good chance that you can actually fix the problem on your own at home without needing to go and see the vet.

To do this, you are going to want to try and soften up your puppy’s diet by giving them chicken and rice that does not include any extra salt.  You can even add some additional vegetable broth in order to try and make this more appealing to them if they are resistant when it comes to eating.  On top of that, you can also try to incorporate cooked sweet potato and even plain canned pumpkin, as they normally work wonders when it comes to normalizing stool.

If you are unsure about anything, be sure to visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.
