What is the Difference Between Grass Fed Whey Protein & Regular Whey?

Many people who even have the slightest interest in eating healthy, would have heard various suggestions regarding what to eat. One of such is the benefit of eating cattle that have been grass-fed on whey and the typical and less costly grain-fed one.

These two kinds of dairy are not the only ones that you can purchase. For instance, Cattle that are organically raised must eat pasture, even in the most minute form. The cattle in question can also be fed organic grain.

However, this article will focus on the best grass fed whey protein and if it is better than the typical dairy option.  

First, let us begin with the difference between both. 

Regular Dairy Vs. Grass-Fed

There is no regulation to the word “grass-fed” by the FDA, so it is entirely unclear what one is getting. Assuming we are truthful and we buy milk that is from a grass-fed cow, it means that the animal has only eaten shrubs, grasses, etc. So, before the cow was milked, it had been fed grasses and shrubs for many weeks.

A big difference exists between “grass-fed” and “pasture-raised.” Pasture-raised cattle can also obtain supplemental grains occasionally.

What choice would you make if you were given two cups containing milk grass-fed cows and regular cows, respectively? The only reason why one would go for grass-fed cow milk is the fat content. A grass-fed cow’s milk is only different from the regular cow due to its fat content alone. 

Both the grass-fed and the regular cow milk have the same level of proteins and carbs.

Glutathione, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A are grass-fed fat components; it also contains a powerful anti-oxidant. You can also Omega-3 fatty acids; this is a pro-health fatty acid that can be traced to healthy joints, good mental health, etc. The milk has also been traced to reducing the rate of inflammation and body fat.

Little evidence shows that it requires less strength to bring grass-fed cows into full maturity, and they usually have a lesser carbon footprint. Other studies have proven otherwise because these cows take up more space and take greater time to mature. The reason for these cows’ delayed maturity is that they are not usually fed with growth-stimulating hormones like the other kind. 

Also, the interplay in the pH environments of each diet is a significant difference. Grass-fed diets are beneficial to the cow’s intestinal bacteria and, in the end, give more nutritional benefits. The reason for this is the favorable pH environment that a grass-fed diet offers to the bacteria. 

Benefits of Their Proteins

From what we’ve seen, we can easily say that grass-fed is better than grain-fed, right? Not exactly.

According to a renowned nutrition scientist, milk processing ultimately takes out fat from the whey’s protein powder. The resultant effect of regularly eating a grass meal is an improvement in the cattle’s fatty acid and vitamin composition. In the process of manufacturing whey protein, the protein is removed from the fats and carbohydrates. For most typical whey proteins, all their fats have been extracted. Due to CLA, Omega-3, and Vitamin E present in grass-fed whey, it is of better nutritional benefits than the grain-fed ones. 

During the manufacturing process, since the fat is extracted, then it means that most of the CLA, Omega-3s, and Vitamin E are also wiped off. As compared to the grain-fed whey, the protein levels are the same, so the tissue-building function of the protein is still found.
