Is it Safe for Bunnies to Eat Cucumber Peels or Skin?

It is no big secret to anybody that has ever had a pet rabbit, but they are going to need a wide variety of different vegetables in their daily diets.  These are going to include some leafy greens and some very yummy vegetables.  When it comes to cucumbers however, they are not necessarily going to be considered a fruit, as they only contain a very tiny amount of sugar.  With that being said, does that mean that it is safe for you to feed cucumber to your pet rabbit?  To answer this question in a word, that word is going to be yes, but with some limitations.  That main limitation being that you are only going to want to feed your pet rabbit cucumber every now and again, but not very often.

You see, cucumbers are going to be considered non-toxic when it comes to your rabbit, and most of them are actually going to really enjoy their taste.  This means that rabbits are going to be able to safely eat the cucumber flesh, seeds, and even the skin.  However, cucumbers are also going to contain just a few nutrients, as well as a very high-water content.  This means that they will very easily be able to give your rabbit diarrhea if it is eaten in any amount of excess.  Essentially, you are going to need to monitor how much cucumber your rabbit is eating, ideally limiting that amount to roughly one thin slice about 2-3 times per week.

Here is everything that you need to know about cucumbers and your rabbit eating them in the safest way possible.

Are Rabbits Able to Eat Cucumber?

While you are more than likely going to be thinking of a cucumber as a typical salad accessory, they are actually going to be a type of fruit.  This is because cucumbers are going to be produced from the flowers that belong to the cucumber plant, which is actually going to be in the gourd family.  They are grown on vines and have blossoms that are also going to be edible.

While the fact remains that humans are able to enjoy the deliciousness of a cucumber in abundance, that is not going to be the case for your pet rabbit.  While the fact that cucumbers are composed of 96% water is going to be true, they are also going to be very low in calories and even make an ideal diet food.  On top of that, the delicious taste that a cucumber gives you is also going to go perfectly in a nice salad or even a sandwich as well.  But with all of that being said, is cucumber going to be something that you actually want to feed to your rabbit?

In moderation, cucumber is going to be perfectly fine for you to feed your rabbit.  There are not going to be any type of toxins or other poisons that are present when you eat too much cucumber.  However, even though cucumbers don’t have any lethal side effects, does not necessarily mean that they are going to be the best thing that you can feed to your rabbit.  With that being said, as with just about every other fruit available to you, you should only give your rabbit cucumber as a very occasional treat.

This is actually going to be true when it comes to other greens as well, those including vegetables, fruits and even cucumbers.  This is the best way to make sure that they are able to get a well-balanced diet.  However, most of your rabbit’s diet is typically going to be composed of leafy foliage and hay if you would like to maintain a healthy diet for them.  At the end of the day however, a slice of cucumber is not going to do them any harm at all.

When it does come to cucumber and your rabbit, you must know that there are actually two different types of cucumber.  You have the North American cucumber, and then you have the English cucumber.  The North American cucumber is typically going to be much larger and longer, normally being much smoother than any English cucumber variety as well.  With that being said, most rabbits are actually going to have a much harder time eating the skin of the North American cucumber, but that is essentially going to mean nothing as both types of cucumbers are going to have roughly the same amount of nutritional value.

Does Your Rabbit Even Like Cucumber?

Most rabbits that you come across are going to actually love cucumbers and be very happy whenever one is put into their cage.  However, there are some rabbits that will ignore it, not paying it any attention at all.  This is going to be because there are some rabbits that simply don’t like how cucumber tastes.

While a cucumber is not necessarily going to need to be part of your rabbit’s diet, it is going to be a healthy treat for them that is safe to eat.  No, they are not going to be getting any type of special nutrients from cucumbers that they are not able to get anywhere else; it is potentially going to be a very delicious and tasty treat that you can give to your rabbit every now and again.  In fact, if your rabbit does end up liking cucumbers, you can actually start to introduce it as part of their regular diet.  Just keep in mind that there are going to be some very potentially dangerous health effects if you end up feeding your rabbit too much cucumber.

Cucumbers are going to be a very delicious treat that you can incorporate into your rabbit’s diet, however, you are going to need to make sure that you do not overfeed them the very same cucumber.  With essentially a very minimal health value to your pet rabbit, cucumbers should only be used as a special treat every few days, that being if they like eating cucumbers.
