Talk Nation Radio: Phil Wilayto on Ukraine, Poland, and the Dangers of the New Cold War

While the U.S. public is distracted by endless election circuses and the hunt for more bread, the U.S. military and NATO are stirring up WWIII in Eastern Europe. This week we speak with Phil Wilayto. He is editor of The Virginia Defender newspaper and a member of the Administrative Committee of the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC). Phil has been spending time in Ukraine and Poland working with antiwar and anti-fascist groups. For more on UNAC see

Mr. Wilayto seems to subscribe to that right vs. left, Democrat vs. Republican, both sides of the aisle mantra out of Washington. He alleges a sense of community existed under Soviet communism and even claims a sense of nostalgia exists while adding the subtle disclaimer that they didn’t get everything they wanted under communism. The Ukrainians haven’t forgotten the millions of their recent ancestors who were starved to death in engineered famines or the thousands of “soviet” Ukrainian dissidents and soldiers who were shipped of to the gulags after defeating the right wing tyrants because the left wing tyrants wouldn’t tolerate trained, combat experienced veterans in their midst (homeland security anyone?). Nor have they forgotten that monument to left wing incompetence and festering sore Chernobyl. Would you prefer your genocide courtesy of Hitler or Mao? Do you prefer democratic millionaires and billionaires or republican millionaires and billionaires? Which side of that fictitious aisle do you choose? Tyranny is tyranny. Trying to draw some moral distinction between mass murder, political prisons and “mental hospitals” based on the right vs. left idiocy is a futile academic exercise.
