  • The First Amendment

The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.

**Amendment I** Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

  • Religious Freedom is our First Freedom

As the world threatens to shrink the value of religious beliefs, people of faith show that religious freedom is at the heart of what makes the world a better place. Religious freedom is the freedom of conscience; the freedom to think, act and follow one’s beliefs. In America, it is our first freedom.

Religious freedom means separation of church & state, let’s remember. The state has to have a great toleration of religion and it must also enforce tolerance among religions for each other. Religion in general tends towards intolerance. Christianity in particular has provided the justification for slavery & genocide,, although today the dark side of Islam gets all the attention. The world would be a better place without zealous people marching around doing “god’s will”.

      • Religious freedom means separation of church & state, where is this located in the Bill of Rights?

**Religious Freedom is our First Freedom**

Whether you like it or not! Does the words of God offend you as a non believer? Does the word unicorns have the same reaction? Silly!

        • jadan

Religion may be your “first” freedom, professor, but mine would be freedom of speech if I’m going to make a list in terms of preference. I’m not a “non-believer”. I simply believe differently than you do. Practice some tolerance, homo religiosus.

          • Funny, you contacted me and ‘NOT’ the other way around ‘SERF’!

          • berger friedrich-wolfgang

SPREADING “HATE” – SPEECH , is a very “Curious(?)” KIND of “FREEDOM” ! STUPIDITY is “NO EXCUSE” – ANYWAY !!! SHALON !

      • berger friedrich-wolfgang

HM , Remember a strange Story , Where JEWS(?) sold their BROTHER “BENJAMIN” into “SLAVERY” ! Not just a PROOF , for “Your HONESTY” !!!

  • MrLiberty

“Happy whatever doesn’t offend you”. And whatever does offend you….get over it. Freedom of speech isn’t required if all you are going to say is “OK” with everyone. We no longer need freedom of the press because the mainstream press doesn’t investigate our government, speak freely, or expose wrongdoing anymore. If we do not exercise our freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, etc. for fear of offending (especially the government) then we might as well NOT have then anymore.

    • Right on MrLiberty! “If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” George Washington

  • This is for all those government schooled ‘Sheeples’!

You neglect to point out that the preamble to the US Constitution makes no mention of god.
