NYT Not “Descending” Into Propaganda

The New York Times says in an article today that, although the US won’t join the majority of the world by signing the treaty banning cluster bombs, it has “abided by its provisions”.

Glenn Greenwald published an article in response documenting that, in fact, the US “continually violates all” of the provisions of the cluster bomb treaty, “systematically and as a matter of policy doing exactly that which the treaty expressly bans.”

Many journalists, such as Robert Parry, methodically note the propaganda of the self-proclaimed “paper of record”, but some fall into the trap of thinking that NYT has only recently started “becoming” a propaganda rag, or has been “descending” into propaganda for the last ten or twenty years.  As a few examples illustrate, this is a misconception.

1872: “A three-month strike of 100,000 workers in New York won the eight-hour day, and at a victory celebration in June 1872, 150,000 workers paraded through the city. The New York Times wondered what proportion of the strikers were ‘thoroughly American.'”

1961: The New York Times “cooperated with the Kennedy administration in deceiving the American public” on the US invasion of Cuba. “James Reston and Turner Catledge of the New York Times, on the government’s request, did not run a story about the imminent invasion. [Historian] Arthur Schlesinger said of the New York Times action: ‘This was another patriotic act…'”

1991: “The two leading news magazines, Time and Newsweek, had special editions hailing the victory in the [Gulf] war… A New York Times editorial (March 30, 1991) said: ‘America’s victory in the Persian Gulf war … provided special vindication for the U.S. Army, which brilliantly exploited its firepower and mobility and in the process erased memories of its grievous difficulties in Vietnam.'”  In its 1991 invasion of the Gulf region, the US killed approximately two hundred thousand people.

The cases are endless, and have led one of the West’s leading media analysts, Chomsky, to conclude and show, time and again, that “[t]he New York Times is pure propaganda.”

Little wonder then that, as US theoretical physicist and cosmologist Lawrence Krauss points out, although Chomsky has been named in “at least several surveys as the top public intellectual in the world” and “one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century”, he is “marginalized in US media” like the NYT.  He was interviewed by NYT once in 2015, but the interview was excluded from the hard copy of the paper published only in its blog (blogs.nytimes.com).  Before that, the last time Chomsky was quoted in the Times was “in the 1970s”.

hoo boy, the list is endless. Let’s add:

The NY Time & its Moscow “reporter” Walter Duranty collaborated to suppress reporting of the 1932-34 genocide by deliberate starvation of over five million Ukrainians by the Soviet state (at a time when the Nazis victims numbered in the hundreds and the Times’ pages were full of it daily). (See especially S.J. Taylor, Stalin’s Apologist (Oxford 1990)

Also in this period the NY Times covered up the exposure by Marine General Smedley Butler and others in testimony to the House of Representatives of a plan by Wall Street insiders to overthrow the US Government by force. See among others Jules Archer, The Plot To Seize The White House (1973) and Antony Sutton, Wall Street and FDR (1975); also the excellent biography of Butler, Maverick Marine.

When British and Russian troops invaded Persia (Iran) the New YOrk Times headline (August 26, 1941) read “BRITAIN AND SOVIET ASSURE TEHRAN OF PEACEFUL AIMS.”

This is no surprise since from the time of the Spanish American War the New York Times has NEVER seen a war it didn’t do everything in its power to incite and help lie America into.

On the other hand, of the epoch-making 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art at the NYC Armory in 1913 the Times wrote “this movement is surely a part of the general movement, discernible to al the world, to disrupt, degrade, if not destroy, not only art but literature and society, too.” Genocide and Wall Street treason are OK with the Times, but it draws the line at Nude Descending A Staircase.

      Ha! Excellent. Thanks.

Sadly a great deal of US mainstream media is little more than a propaganda outlet of Washington and the Pentagon. Even worse, most Americans are incapable of seeing it for what it is, yet are more than willing to identify propaganda in foreign media. The US has fallen.

The NY Times serves Wall Street first, Washington second — just like Washington does.

    • truthtime

If you point this out to many of them they simply wave their hand and so, “I don’t believe in that conspiracy theory nonsense.” That one phrase in the lexicon has dumbed down people incredibly.

“Descend”? That is really funny! For decades the NYT has had its nose pressed firmly against the filthy concrete of the bottom basement floor.

Ate right through it they did, for the Iraq wars….

  • And then don’t forget: radio show hosts then quote the NYTimes (and other mainstream propaganda like TIME, WaPo, etc…) as if they are the ultimate resource to quote to win an argument. IE: a local radio show host will use a NYTimes articles as reference to winning an argument over a caller by saying the NYTimes is the reputable paper of record and the caller is using an independent media source…which “doesn’t count”. Thereby making radio show talk hosts ALSO propaganda.

Anyone who quotes propaganda is also a propagandist.

Believe in the truth, not the messenger.

Chomsky did some good stuff, well-researched and well-reasoned. If it formed half a lie, search for the other half of truth.

The New York Times loves war because war is good for Wall Street and good for the banksters. Satanic? No, it’s just their local “culture.” After 1828 when New York State, over Manhattan’s protests — since it was the center of the business — outlawed the sale of slaves, NYC had to find some other line and converted its operations to debt slavery, and nothing is better for debt slavery than war.

The governing media such as the NYT provide its readers daily with freshly constructed opinion suitable for the slave mentality of the corporate-loyal masses.

Help A&E9/11Truth Help the Public and hopefully, the New York Times:

The September 2015 NY Times Billboard

$4,500 Raised – $4,500 to Go – Thank You for Making It Possible!

After two days of fundraising, we are halfway to the $9,000 needed to pay for the September 2015 New York Times Billboard. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.

Here’s the story on this important opportunity. Just last week, the owners of the billboard across the street from The New York Times — a spot they usually sell for more than $20,000 — came to us with an unbelievable offer of $9,000 for four weeks.

We knew we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to amplify our message during the 9/11 anniversary. And so we are sharing it with you. If you would like to see this billboard go up next week, please chip in what you can by the end of Labor Day weekend to help make it possible.

    Remember David Sanger?

He’s The New York Times’ chief Washington correspondent. In December 2013, he told one of AE911Truth’s C-SPAN callers, “We’ve not found any evidence so far to suggest that the building collapses were caused by anything other than the two airplanes.” In response, over 1,000 of you emailed Sanger and the Times to tell them, “Clearly, you haven’t been looking.”

Now is our opportunity to send that message even more loudly. And to make sure they have no excuse not to look at the evidence, we’ll be mailing the Beyond Misinformation booklet to every editor and reporter who works in The New York Times Building. Of course, it’s not just about The New York Times:
Our impossible-to-miss billboard will also be seen by 100,000 people each day. That means a total of three million views during the month of September.

Please help us capture the attention of the nation’s “newspaper of record” — and of millions of New Yorkers and tourists — by making a modest contribution this Labor Day weekend.

Thank you for helping to make this the most educational 9/11 anniversary yet.

    Sincerely,

    The AE911Truth Team
