Global Sea Ice Back to 1979 Levels … Ice Has “Moved” from Arctic to Antarctic

New charts from the University of Illinois’ Department of Atmospheric Sciences (based upon data provided by NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Prediction) show something odd.

Specifically, the new data shows that global sea ice is back to 1979 levels … but that that sea ice has “moved” from the Arctic to the Antarctic (in the sense that sea ice has increased in the Antarctic but decreased in the Arctic):

What does this mean?

Extent and volume are not the same thing. Sq Km is extent and relates to the extent of sea ice. Land ice builds up volume and thus has to be considered when trying to say whether or not the Antarctic is loosing ice. It is.

“Skeptic arguments that Antarctica is gaining ice frequently hinge on an error of omission, namely ignoring the difference between land ice and sea ice.”……..

“Estimates of recent changes in Antarctic land ice (see above) range from losing 100 gigatons/year to over 300 gigatons/year. Because 360 gigatons/year represents an annual sea level rise of 1 mm/year, recent estimates indicate a contribution of between 0.27 mm/year and 0.83 mm/year coming from Antarctica. There is of course uncertainty in the estimations methods but multiple different types of measurement techniques (explained here) all show the same thing, Antarctica is losing land ice as a whole, and these losses are accelerating quickly.”

      >> “Skeptic arguments that Antarctica is gaining ice frequently hinge on an
error of omission, namely ignoring the difference between land ice and
      sea ice.”……..

I’ve noticed skeptics’ arguments are often suspiciously brief. E.g., “did you know that Mars is warming, too?”

      • kimyo

if it is true that mars and venus are also in a COOLING trend, then one sentence is all it takes. that’s how science works.

        • yo neighbor

Yeah, brief… lieing politicians remedy for global cooling… er… global warming…. oh… ahh… climate change is to dramatically lower the standard of living & increased gubment dependency on everyone but the ultra rich, using manipulated data. Don’t ya hate brevity.

        • wunsacon

“If it’s true Saddam has WMD, then one sentence is all it takes.”

^^^ That’s how “if ‘X’ is true, then one sentence ‘X’ is all it takes” works, kimyo.

What’s one of the methods of the propagandist? Repeat one short sentence over and over. Well, it takes more to persuade me. I need to see well-reasoned arguments and solid evidence.

      • yo neighbor

Yeah, brief… lieing politicians remedy for global cooling… er… global warming…. oh… ahh… climate change is to dramatically lower the standard of living & increased gubment dependency on everyone but the ultra rich, using manipulated data. Is that too brief?

        • wunsacon

          Yup. Too brief.

      • danram

Just admit that you are wrong and have been all along. It’s much more dignified.

  • Richard Healy

There is some confusion in this article. You talk about Antarctic and Arctic “Ice” but you only show plots of sea ice. Jacobson appears to be referring mostly to land ice only. Clearly Antarctic sea ice extent is increasing, contradicting climate model predictions of sea ice loss in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The models also did not predict the global warming hiatus. If this “hiatus” continues for a few more years then clearly the models do not have the necessary feedback mechanisms or other externalities to make accurate predictions of future climate change.

    • KC

There is no haitus (pause in the increaseof warming). There is a SLOWING of warming INCREASE which may well end very soon.

IF the total volume of sea and land ice has decreased then the Antarctic is melting regardless of the extent of sea ice. The volume had decreased and is decreasing at a faster pace. Sea Ice extent is not the measure that matters
“The floating ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic Ice Sheet restrain the grounded ice-sheet flow. Thinning of an ice shelf reduces this effect, leading to an increase in ice discharge to the ocean. Using 18 years of continuous satellite radar altimeter observations, we have computed decadal-scale changes in ice-shelf thickness around the Antarctic continent. Overall, average ice-shelf volume change accelerated from negligible loss at 25 ± 64 cubic kilometers per year for 1994–2003 to rapid loss of 310 ± 74 cubic kilometers per year for 2003–2012. West Antarctic losses increased by ~70% in the past decade, and earlier volume gain by East Antarctic ice shelves ceased. In the Amundsen and Bellingshausen regions, some ice shelves have lost up to 18% of their thickness in less than two decades.”

Extent may take some big and sudden hits as some of the shelves collapse

“Antarctic sea ice extent is increasing, contradicting climate model predictions of sea ice loss”:
This isn’t true. In 2002, AGW scientists predicted Antarctic sea ice would increase & reconfirmed in 2005. Ever since, sick silly sleepy AGW denier liars have sat on the increasing Antarctic sea ice, as if it wasn’t an AGW scientists’ prediction.

Why is Antarctic sea ice at record levels despite global warming?

Antarctic ice floes extended further than ever recorded this southern winter, confounding the world’s most-trusted climate models.

“It’s not expected,” says Professor John Turner, a climate expert at the British Antarctic Survey. “The world’s best 50 models were run and 95% of them have Antarctic sea ice decreasing over the past 30 years.”

The winter ice around the southern continent has been growing relatively constantly since records began in 1979. The US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), which monitors sea ice using satellite data, said this week that the year’s maximum was 1.54m sq km (595,000 sq miles) above the 1981-2010 average. The past three winters have all produced record levels of ice.

It’s May and it feels like we’re in the middle of July. We’re screwed if we don’t combat the climate crisis.

Thats funny – its May and it feels like the middle of October where I am (south Texas).

  • “What does this mean?”
    A) The author of this blog studied journalism, not science
    B) The author of this blog is being purposefully disingenuous, probably for financial gain
    C) Volume and Extent are different

The correct answer is D) All of the above

Why is it that anyone who posts information that doesn’t comport with AGW is automatically a paid shill? Maybe they are, maybe not, but if you’re gonna smear someone you should back it up.

    • The Great Pause lengthens again: Global temperature update: The Pause is now 18 years 3 months (219 months) ‘The RSS (Remote Sensing Systems) satellite dataset shows no global warming at all for 219 months from October 1996 to December 2014 – more than half the 432-month satellite record.’ ‘The global warming that the IPCC had so confidently but misguidedly predicted 25 years ago has stopped altogether.’ ‘The Great Pause is a growing embarrassment to those who had told us with ‘substantial confidence’ that the science was settled and the debate over. Nature had other ideas.’

Goddard shows how, in recent years, NOAA’s US Historical Climatology
Network (USHCN) has been “adjusting” its record by replacing real
temperatures with data “fabricated” by computer models. The effect of
this has been to downgrade earlier temperatures and to exaggerate those
from recent decades, to give the impression that the Earth has been
warming up much more than is justified by the actual data.

Good explanations for why antarctic ice is increasing, except it’s too bad the explanations come after the ice increase has happened. Too bad climate models didn’t actually predict that antarctic ice would increase, too bad models predicted the opposite, that antarctic ice would decrease. Also too bad his explanations lack remorse for all the doom & gloom scaremongering we’ve had to put up with for years about how the world as we know it is about to end because of sea level rise when all the ice melts in the antarctic.

  • jadan

16th Century maps exist, based on more ancient maps, that depict the Antarctic continent without ice. So, what’s all the hysteria about “climate change”? We know very little about the history of this planet. And we are not capable of geo-engineering in any meaningful way to “fix” it. So why not just go solar and shut the fuck up?

  • Jaget santos

I see deniers still don’t have a clue about volume and area.

    – 159 Gt Antarctic LAND ice volume………McMillan el al, GRL (2014)
    + 26 Gt Antarctic SEA ice volume…………Holland et al, J Climate (2014)
    – 261 Gt Arctic sea ice…………………………..PIOMAS
    – 378 Gt Greenland, Enderlin et al………….GRL (2014)
    – 259 Gt other land based glaciers…………Gardner et al. Science (2013)
These are the facts. Antarctic ice gain is small in the big picture. Deniers repeat – THE BIG PICTURE.
