Blowback from U.S. Torture
In the back of my mind, I’ve wondered why ISIS puts captured American hostages in orange jumpsuits before killing them.
Without thinking about it, I’ve assumed it’s some weird Muslim tradition.
But a high-level FBI counter-terrorism officer – who was the lead interrogator of numerous high-level Al Qaeda terrorists without using torture (Ali Soufan) – explains the clothing in the Washington Post:
“Imagine if we didn’t go down that road [of using torture]. Imagine. We played into the enemy’s hand,” said Ali H. Soufan, a former F.B.I. agent who clashed with the C.I.A. over its interrogation tactics. “Now we have American hostages in orange jumpsuits because we put people in orange jumpsuits.”
In other words, ISIS is putting American hostages in orange jumpsuits because the U.S. put Muslim detainees in Guantanamo in orange jumpsuits.
And because the U.S. waterboarded Arab detainees, ISIS is waterboarding Western hostages.
