University of Alaska Scientists: Fukushima Radiation May Be Making Alaska Seals Sick

Is Fukushima Radiation Making West Coast Wildlife Sick?

American sailors on the USS Reagan got really sick after having snowball fights with radioactive snow blowing off of the coast of Fukushima.

University of Alaska professors Doug Dasher, John Kelley, Gay Sheffield, and Raphaela Stimmelmayr theorize that radioactive snow might have also caused Alaska’s seals to become sick (page 222; hat tip EneNews):

On March 11, 2011 off Japan’s west coast, an earthquake-generated tsunami struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant resulting in a major nuclear accident that included a large release of airborne radionuclides into the environment. Within five days of the accident atmospheric air masses carrying Fukushima radiation were transiting into the northern Bering and Chukchi seas. During summer 2011 it became evident to coastal communities and wildlife management agencies that there was a novel disease outbreak occurring in several species of Arctic ice-associated seals. Gross symptoms associated with the disease included lethargy, no new hair growth, and skin lesions, with the majority of the outbreak reports occurring between the Nome and Barrow region. NOAA and USFWS declared an Alaska Northern Pinnipeds Usual Mortality Event (UME) in late winter of 2011. The ongoing Alaska 2011 Northern Pinnipeds UME investigation continues to explore a mix of potential etiologies (infectious, endocrine, toxins, nutritious etc.), including radioactivity. Currently, the underlying etiology remains undetermined [i.e. scientists don’t yet know what caused the seals’ sickness, but they think it might have been Fukushima radiation]. We present results on gamma analysis (cesium 134 and 137) of muscle tissue from control and diseased seals, and discuss wildlife health implications from different possible routes of exposure to Fukushima fallout to ice seals. Since the Fukushima fallout period occurred during the annual sea ice cover period from Nome to Barrow, a sea ice based fallout scenario in addition to a marine food web based one is of particular relevance for the Fukushima accident. Under a proposed sea ice fallout deposition scenario, radionuclides would have been settled onto sea ice. Sea ice and snow would have acted as a temporary refuge for deposited radionuclides; thus radionuclides would have only become available for migration during the melting season and would not have entered the regional food web in any appreciable manner until breakup (pulsed release). The cumulative on-ice exposure for ice seals would have occurred through external, inhalation, and non-equilibrium dietary pathways during the ice-based seasonal spring haulout period for molting/pupping/breeding activities. Additionally, ice seals would have been under dietary/metabolic constraints and experiencing hormonal changes associated with reproduction and molting.

Here are some pictures of the sick seals (rounded up by EneNews):

Harmed: Seals like this one in Barrow, Alaska, have been found with bleeding lesions, damaged fur and flippers thought to have been caused by radiation from Fukushima, Japan.

Many other West Coast animals have gotten sick. Scientists need to get to the bottom of what is making them sick, whether it’s radiation or something else.

The investigation started TWO YEARS AGO and they still don’t know whether it’s radiation? That doesn’t make sense. Just off the top of my head I recall testing that’s already been done on bluefin tuna in California (amounting to about a tenth of normal radiation from potassium in a banana) and Pacific Northwest salmon that had zero indication of Fukushima radiation.

you go ahead and eat some then I sure wont and thats about all I used to eat Salmon but not now

Why do you assume I eat salmon? I’m 98% vegetarian mostly for philosophical reasons, but another big reason is that ocean resources are dwindling fast due mostly to human overpopulation, plus all the *verified* environmental toxins. We don’t need speculation and disinfo to convince people to do anything. That only results in the opposite of its intended effect. Remember the leak re: climate change emails and the distrust that created? Also if your only concern is Fukushima radiation then you end up dying of starvation, because even plants could be tainted with radioactive rain, etc. Is anyone testing the plants? It’s completely reasonable to question our gov’t because they’re in the hip pocket of Big Energy (just to name one Big), but the funny thing is I have yet to see any alerts from independent sources such as either. The potential for global catastrophe is already far more than enough reason to campaign against nuclear energy. Why muddy the waters with scientific ineptitude? Here are 28 more examples:

All very valid points ….I am old so a little goes a long way ;o) but I grow my own food now very hard to make all my own getting there slow but sure

  • See “America’s Nuclear Radiation Cover Up 1946 – 1958, Barbaric Racism” at Veterans Today.

A documentary film produced for PBS by boycotted due to disturbing TRUTH. We KNOW the hazards of radionuclids, and these mammals are experiencing the SAME thing that the Marshall Islanders experienced from the Feral government bomb tests.

Based on three draft and final reports concerning the Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR)
bioeffects of HAARP, the Air Force concluded in 1993 that there would be “[n]o
bioeffects from RFR.” (ROD at 9; see also FEIS Vol. I at 3-146, 3-149, 3-150.) The
primary concern with non ionizing radiation such as RFR, as outlined by the Air Force, is
the potential for “gross heating”; that is, heat produced at relatively high RFR
intensities exceeding the thermoregulatory capabilities of a given animal and thus causing
deleterious effects. See FEIS Vol. I at 3-147…….

Speaking of HARRP….. see map Block (redacted area over Greenland) was developed to maintain high pressure in the West allowing the geoengineers to dissolve the old block (causing drought) off the West Coast in preparation for the Super Bowl.

They have to stop sending Cali’s weather north to avoid continuous clippers running South East. They are also drying out a storm headed for Cali…. (not cloud seeding) See orange to the left of the green storm coming Cali’s way. The block in the East and the chemtrailed masses on the West side of the storm is designed to turn the storm into a high pressure ridge. But we are WINNING! Rain is coming.

You see the green traveling East over So. Cal in the above map, avoiding set up for Santa Ana’s. Keep misting, keep fans facing East. I will let you know when changes are needed.

Time for Central Californians to get the fan….plug it in….. turn it on…. and blow towards the East……for rain.

The article states that “Scientists need to get to the bottom of what is making them sick, whether it’s radiation or something else.” Fair enough! But until “scientists” manage to get around to that task–whenever that may be–the rest of us, we who are not card-carrying “scientists”, need to become lay “scientists” and logic this thing out ourselves since it appears that we’re on our own in an ocean of propaganda as well as an ocean of radioactivity.

Prior to Fukushima the fishes and animals were doing pretty okay on and off the west coast of North America. Fukushima, through tsunami, TEPCO and the Japanese government has released untold amounts of radioactivity into the north Pacific, radioactivity that Pacific currents have carried to North America. Now much of the sea-life there, fish and mammals show symptoms of radioactivity poisoning–as the article well pointed out.

Let’s forget about the “scientists” because most “science” these days is funded by governments or corporations. Most “science” these days has an agenda. So it’s in our laps now. We are the new scientists (without quotes); we don’t need the arch-bishops of “science” to instruct us. This may not be the best of all possible worlds, but it sure is one of the simplest. Like those who devised the rules of real science, all we have to do is look at things straight-on. Straight-on, Fukushima, TEPCO, the Japanese government and the collusion of the US government and the nuclear lobby have poisoned our world. The animals are suffering, sick and dying. God help the surfers!

The ongoing radioactive contamination horror emanating from the Fukushima disaster, a ‘Level 8+’ extinction event that will poison the Pacific Ocean for countless centuries, and inevitably destroy Japan, is only the beginning. There are 440+ AGING nuclear time-bomb plants like Fukushima on this planet satellite… and psychopathic capitalist demons plan on building more of these terrifying beasts.

In the United States (of Perpetual War Profiteering) there are 104 active (and worn out) operational nuke plants, 23 of them like the flawed GE Mark One reactor design at Fukushima. This does not include countless numbers of spent fuel pools that must be constantly pumped with fresh water… lest the fuel blows up into a mega-death extinction nightmare scenario.

Yessssss… get ready for more Fukushima disasters in the near future. Entire areas of the Earth’s surface will become uninhabitable for all complex life forms. We are now witnessing a major EXTINCTION EVENT on this planet.

PREDICTION: Old Coyote Knose that the United States will NOT exist by 2050 or 2060. And the rest of humanity (a.k.a.: ‘ewe-man-unkind) will be perched at the edge of EXTINCTION by the end of the 21st century.

    • dont mind if I do

Someone should tell China, Russia and north Korea, to stop pretending they’re capitalists. Its apparently confusing to people like yourself.

      You ‘enlightened’ tool you.

  • RadRainMan

It seems apparent that there is surely something wrong here. You can’t have over 400 tons of radioactive water, by TEPCO’s own admission, being dumped into the Pacific Ocean, EVERY DAY, for almost three years and it not have an effect on the ecosystem . We have to up our game here and understand that the global narrative is being driven by the purveyors of the information, namely TEPCO and the nuclear power industry. They have to save face in the midst of this debacle, so they employ tried and true tactics of divide and conquer. Nobody has the facts, everyone is blowing this way out of proportion, the end-of-timers have latched on, the Pacific will dilute the radiation, only trace amounts found in food, less than you get from eating a banana, the fish are fine, don’t eat the fish and so on… What you know for yourself to be true, is true for you. Be discerning, do your own research and make up your own mind. All is not lost, there are things we can do to mitigate the effects of this stuff for our children and it is up to us to do so. This is a horrible thing that has taken place, to be sure, we have to pull together, share the best information we can to get through this and survive. I know we can do it and there are many others working on solutions to help. It is time to share ideas, support each other’s knowledge and expand our reach of influence to overshadow those who would like to suppress and hide the truth from us.

Anyone who throws in potassium and bananas is foolish. Nuclear reactors are not producing bananas. Potassium is a natural isotope which the planet has adapted through the beginning of earth.
Nuclear reactors creat thousands of isotopes that are not if this planet and not in this universe. Our planet and inhabitants have no immunity to these radio nuclei.
Homeostasis does not factor as it does with bananas and potassium.
It’s not bannana, potato chips or rocks coming out of a reactor. Stop with the irelavent comparison.
