Preface: I was born and raised in America, and love my country. But the U.S. should abide by international laws.
Indeed, it is in our self-interest to do so. For example, torture creates new terrorists; but prosecuting the torturers would help to reduce the hatred – and terrorism – which comes from the horrendous program of torture.
Similarly, top counter-terrorism experts say that indefinite detention – such as we have at Guantanamo – increases terrorism.
As such, my self-interest as an American is not to cover up or excuse war crimes but my government, but to oppose them … to help prevent more terrorist attacks in the future.
