The U.S., Britain and Israel have Used Chemical Weapons within the Last 10 Years

Those Condemning Syria Have Themselves Recently Used Chemical Weapons

We condemn all use of chemical weapons.

But the U.S. used chemical weapons against civilians in Iraq in 2004. Evidence here, here, here, here, here, here.

Israeli also used white phosphorous in 2009 during “Operation Cast Lead” (and perhaps subsequently).  Israel ratified Protocol III of Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (“Protocol III”) – which outlaws the use of incendiary devices in war – in 2007. So this was a war crime.

Moreover, the 1925 Geneva Protocol (which is different from Protocol III) prohibits “the use in war of asphyxiating, poisonous or other gases”.

The use of White phosphorus (“WP”) may also be a war crime under other international treaties and domestic U.S. laws. For example, the Battle Book, published by the U.S. Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, contains the following sentence: “It is against the law of land warfare to employ WP against personnel targets.”

The U.S. National Safety Council states that “White phosphorus is a poison . . . If its combustion occurs in a confined space, white phosphorus will remove the oxygen from the air and render the air unfit to support life . . . It is considered a dangerous disaster hazard because it emits highly toxic fumes. The EPA has listed white phosphorus as a Hazardous Air Pollutant.

Indeed, it is interesting to note that the U.S. previously called white phosphorous a chemical weapon when Saddam used it against the Kurds.  Interestingly, it has just come out that the U.S. encouraged Saddam’s use of chemical weapons.

Moreover, the U.S. and Britain have been dropping depleted uranium in virtually every country they fight, which causes severe health problems. See this, this, this and this.

University of California at Irvine professor of Middle Eastern history Mark LeVine writes:

Not only did the US aid the use of chemical weapons by the former Iraqi government, it also used chemical weapons on a large scale during its 1991 and 2003 invasions of Iraq, in the form of depleted-uranium (DU) ammunition.

As Dahr Jamail’s reporting for Al Jazeera has shown, the use of DU by the US and UK has very likely been the cause not only of many cases of Gulf War Syndrome suffered by Iraq war veterans, but also of thousands of instances of birth defects, cancer and other diseases – causing a “large-scale public health disaster” and the “highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied” – suffered by Iraqis in areas subjected to frequent and intense attacks by US and allied occupation forces.

And Israel has been accused of using depleted uranium in Syria.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.  But it is hypocritical for the U.S., Britain and Israel to say that we should bomb Syria because the government allegedly used chemical weapons.

Note: The U.S. sprayed nearly 20,000,000 gallons of material containing chemical herbicides and defoliants mixed with jet fuel in Vietnam, eastern Laos and parts of Cambodia. Vietnam estimates 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children born with birth defects as a result of its use.   The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates that up to 1 million people are disabled or have health problems due to Agent Orange. But that was some 50 years ago.

US, Britain = fascist murder gangsters.

    • Flyover099

Understand what you’re saying, yes murderous gangsters. Fascist? Not quite. The term Fascist has been misused because it has been misunderstood (because people have been led to believe as such.)

      • reasons

        Elaborate please

      • SOIA

Fascism is the merging of state and corporations ,that’s why Mussolini stated
        it was better called ‘corporatism’.
Since ,especially in the US , the ties between the big corporations ,banks and the state
are obvious , (lobbygroups count ,not the people, revolving doors between corporations and state bodies)one can say those countries are fascist.

The fact that the people in those countries can vote every four years ,( after which
the elected persons do as they please, or better ,as their handlers please) is irrelevant.
The people can choose their dictator(s) for the next years
Especially in the US , one sees that the electionpromises are broken (change , hope
you can believe in , hhahaha) and the new government follows the same , or even
        intensified policies of their predecessors.

        • zwagbog

          Let me complete your comment:
          Beside the nationalism and the
colonialism, (and racism: now less but still there), things Americans
like very much there’s the common feeling of American exceptionalism.

      • CampTownRace

I think the stigma of nazi Germany confuses most when it comes to the term, fascism. One is reminded of concentration camps, the SS, Hitler and pure evil. As Soia said, Mussolini spelled it out exactly what fascism is. Corporatism is exactly what we have in the US. And like our fascist predecessors, the control of the media is becoming absolute.

Most who hear accusations of US being facsist have a knee jerk reaction and may point out that our “free press” won’t allow it, not fully understanding the mainstream media is a controlled propaganda tool. It spews out messages of terror to keep us in a constant of fear. It points out the enemy who, coincidently, is parked on an oil reserve or vein of precious ore. It contradicts itself in Orwellian double speak fashion. It is a spell on most of us.

        • Garrett

The fact that Fox News and MSNBC are both part of the same American media and both espouse extremely divergent views on where to take American policy and society alone shows that the US is not fascist and that US media is not propaganda.. Fascist states do not allow dissent to go unpunished.. Flyover099 is the only judiciously worded comment above. The rest is hyperbole and misinformation.

          • Kate

The fact that there are two “extremely divergent views” presented does NOT mean it is not manufactured.

First, Fox and MSNBC are not “extremely divergent,” they are marginally divergent at best. They may not agree on hot button issues like gay marriage and abortion, they do tend to agree on two of the most important issues of our time: war and central banking.

Second, neither of these media outlets are demonstrating “dissent.” This is because no one is questioning the fundamental status quo (i.e. war and central banking). Fox and MSNBC, and other “divisive” media outlets, are used to keep Americans divided on relatively unimportant issues so they do not rise up together against the status quo (which many might do if they were properly educated on those issues).

It is not just fascism. It is BRILLIANT fascism that has learned from past regime’s mistakes. Fascism that looks like fascism is destined to fail. Fascism that looks like democracy on the other hand…. it’s been working extremely well for decades now.

          • Klemperer

That’s a very interesting post, Kate. Coming from Germany (and thus sometimes having difficulties to divide between fascism/Nazi-era so calmly – people of my family were killed here) I never saw it that way. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say “post-democracy” or whatever to express the bad things in our societies, but nonetheless – thanks for your post, I learned a lot from what you wrote.

          • rlawson

Both networks are still controlled by corporations. What the sell isn’t news, but entertainment geared towards liberal and conservative consumers. It’s Coke and Pepsi, but it’s still cola.

          • Michael Petithory

Exactly Garrett, but who has been misinformed you or Kate. Can you honestly without doubt say that you have not been misinformed? Why is it that neither network would give Ron Paul air coverage or why 20/20 after holding an hour long interview with him would not air it after spending all of that money and time to hold the interview to begin with?

          • Rothbard Fanatatic

Sorry, I see not difference between Fox and MSNBC. They are both shooting for Big Government. As far as punishing dissent, may I remind you of Bradley Manning and Snow. And they are only punished because they had access to the underbelly of the regime. For us regular dissenters there is no reason for punishment as we are merely sheep to be sheared. One does not whip the sheep that “bahs” too much or too loudly. It just a noisy sheep and harmless.

        • cuja1

There are, and has been concentrastion camps scattered across the United States. Up dated when Bush was in power and again by Fema under Obama…

      • rlawson

Fascism is more accurate than democracy. Oligarchy or Crony Capitalism are also good descriptors. Post citizens united, you can’t seriously argue that we have elements of fascism becoming part of our government can you?

      • eatbothsquaresplease

Fascist indeed is an apt description of how corporations control government in this country through subsidies extorted from income tax. Ralph Nader is spot on in his analysis of this problem.

    • Dave

the people of Britain didn’t want to go to war, our government went ahead anyway

    • Burka

      US, British actors!
Proof the footage was shot pre-2010:

  • Bozo

Your argument goes well beyond the evidence and reveals a concerning desperation in your agenda. Birth defects in Iraq can be caused by many things even including the use of depleted uranium projectiles. Your “evidence” does not support your conclusion. DU weapons are not “chemical weapons”. Neither, BTW, is white phosphorous a “chemical weapon”. Your own source clearly and correctly classifies it as an incendiary device. Now, if you want to contend that ALL weapons (even a bow and arrow or a wooden club) somehow involve “chemicals” and are therefore “chemical weapons” fine. But I don’t think you are willing to reveal such a fallacious equivocation.

    • SOIA

If WP is used in populated areas ,on a massive scale as can be seen in Falluja for example, knowing it will form a deadly cloud , one can well speak of use as a chemical weapon.
It was not used as an incendiary device , nor for lighting or producing a smokescreen.
That one cleverly uses (or better abuses)the text of a law or convention doesn’t change
      the fact.
Thesame goes for DU.DU’s harm is not only from the radiation ,especially from
the inhaled and ingested nano-particles , but DU is also toxic because it’s a heavy-metal
      like Lead , Cacmium etc.

    • Jessica

So we justify bombing a country, which will almost certainly kill civilians, b/c other civilians were killed by another weapon? Or put another way, we will kill more civilians b/c they were killed by the wrong type of weapon. R2P is a fools game, and it’s war by another name.

    • Kate

If DU isn’t a chemical weapon then why did the US claim it was one waaayy back when?

    • alphanon

White phosphorus was classified as a chemical weapon by the US.

The United States also pumped chlorine into VC tunnels during the Vietnam War. I visited the chlorine plant in Vietnam who told me about it.

The burning oil fields couldn’t have caused those defects (rolls eyes). Depleted Uranium is no more harmful then any other heavy metal ammunition. It is used as a radiation “shield”.

  • Michael Petithory

White phosphorous grenades are for equipment destruction only or at least that is the official line. However if it is being used on equipment and enemy personnel are accidentally killed………

  • Zeke Hasting

20 million gallons of dioxin is chemical warfare. It should be noted, that the US gov. /military did not give a rats ass about the men, women, children, or the US troops that were fighting for tin, rubber, and oil. It took 10 years after the Vietnam war ended for the VA to finally admit what they had known for 30 years. By that time, many soldiers died with treatment denied. This article ends with saying this was” 50 years ago”. What it does not say is that the soil, the ground water, the crops and the livestock often contain the “Agent Orange” (dioxin) and it has an accumulative effect . The levels continue to increase. It should be noted that the Vietnamese people had not done anything to Americans and yet the military would used a genocidal weapon like this…which will continue to cause cancers and deaths for the next 50 plus years. A chemical in gas form is horrific , but this form of chemical weapons targets the environment. Pres. Obama has said that “someone has to be made to pay for the use of chemical weapon use”. I agree, and I think that those in the US gov. that OK its use and those in the Military that permit its use, should pay. A comment above references “racism” and that is required to vilify those that you attack and wage war against. The people of Iraq and Afghanistan have done nothing to harm Americans. We were told that the hijackers of 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia as also Bin Laden. And yet we have killed millions of people, far more than all that have been killed in Syria. Obama has killed far more than the number that were gassed in Syria and many were “boys and girls”. Bush and Obama have allowed hundreds of thousands of tons of uranium composite explosives and munitions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Focusing on the latter, the “dirty bomb” dust material is everywhere that the wind blows it. It can be found in drinking water. in the soil, in crops, livestock, and where the people live. None of us would allow any government to put lead dust in our homes, gardens, vehicles, schools, playgrounds, farms, etc. This radioactive dust will be there in these two countries for over 500 +years! There is no way to estimate the millions that will suffer and die from the cancers it will cause. The dust is so fine it enters the lungs when you breath and so many of our soldiers have this inside. This is a genocidal crime against humanity! I feel that Obama is correct and that they “need to pay”. We should do all that we can to see that they are prosecuted for these crimes or it will happen again. Bush and Obama are guilty of war crimes that will result in the deaths of possibly far more than Hitler killed through the entire war!

  • Pádraig Pearse

What a load of BS this post is.

  • Zeke Hasting

“The Question: What Is a Chemical?

Answer: Short answer: Everything is a chemical. Longer answer: Chemistry is the study of matter and its interactions with other matter. Anything made of matter is therefore a chemical. Any liquid, solid, gas. Any pure substance; any mixture. Water is a chemical. Technically speaking, so is a chunk of your computer. A chemical can often be broken down into components, as is true with your computer. ..”

So Chemicals are made up of elements, matter, and since uranium is an element, it is a chemical substance. We often think of chemicals as being a combination of elements that make a different chemical of those combined molecular parts.
DU weapons are designed in such a way that they vaporize on impact and creates an intense gas of radioactive dust. It is militarized so fine that it can pass through the filter of a gas mask. It was reported that in the two airstrikes when Israel attacked Syria, that DU weapons were used. There is no humane reason that these types of weapons should be used by any country, including the USA. The air strikes by the US will be of DU weapons. That means that the US will do a greater harm than what has already been done with the gas used. Who is going to suffer for the violent acts of the US? Is this country and the people going to be better off after Obama unleashes his chemical weapons? These are “dirty bomb ” weapons and our weapons of mass destruction. How can our President say that he cares about “boys and girls”. But he is going to bomb the country with weapons that will cause cancer in uncountable numbers. We have been lied to before and our government wants to carryout what we normally attribute to acts committed by terrorist.
Speaking of terrorist, the rebels are described to be made up of Al Qaeda and Jihadist fighters. That means we are taking the side of the “enemy” and giving “material support” which is illegal!! If any one wanted to use chemical weapons, it would be these ruthless fighters. Check out YouTube and you will see who fired the gas and where it came from. We have been lied to by our Presidents so that they can start crap like this. I would remind the readers that the US government has been arming and helping the rebels for over a year which has only made this situation worse. Over 100,000 killed!

Thank you very much for all of this informations, whoever wrote this for Washingtonsblog.

In Germany nearly all mainstream media are so biased and see us, the western world, as “the only good people” – that you had a hard time finding these informations now. It makes nothing better what happens in Syria (will we learn the truth about everything there some day?) – but the hybris of us in the western world is very strange. Thank you very much! I’m searching for such information, about the use of chemical weapons world wide.

Obama’s asking Congress’ permit to bomb Syria and Iraq (once again). Will he ask for permit when it’s time to share the butin and spoils?

Does all this use of illegal weapons and bombs make it legal again? I say HELL NO!! Israel will be one of half a dozen in prison if the laws were really applied.
