Study: 28% Increase In Thyroid Problems In Babies Born After Fukushima in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington

Is Fukushima Causing Health Problems In the United States?

Infants are much more vulnerable to radiation than adults. And see this.

However, radiation safety standards are set based on the assumption that everyone in the world is a healthy man in his 20s.

Now, a medical doctor (Janette D. Sherman, M. D.) and epidemiologist (Joseph Mangano) have released a study showing a 28% increase in thyroid problems in babies born in Hawaii and America’s West Coast after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Janette Sherman, M.D. worked for the Atomic Energy Commission (forerunner of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission) at the University of California in Berkeley, and for the U.S. Navy Radiation Defense Laboratory in San Francisco. She served on the EPA’s advisory board for 6 years, and has been an advisor to the National Cancer Institute on breast cancer. Dr. Sherman specializes in internal medicine and toxicology with an emphasis on chemicals and nuclear radiation.

Joseph J. Mangano is a public health administrator and researcher who has studied the connection between low-dose radiation exposure and subsequent risk of diseases such as cancer and damage to newborns. He has published numerous articles and letters in medical and other journals in addition to books, including Low Level Radiation and Immune System Disorders: An Atomic Era Legacy.

Their new study – published in the Open Journal of Pediatrics – is entitled “Elevated airborne beta levels in Pacific/West Coast US States and trends in hypothyroidism among newborns after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown.”

Common Dreams notes:

[The study found that] children born in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington between one week and 16 weeks after the meltdown began are 28 percent more likely to suffer from congenital hypothyroidism (CH) than were kids born in those states during the same period one year earlier.

CH results from a build up of radioactive iodine in our thyroids and can result in stunted growth, lowered intelligence, deafness, and neurological abnormalities—though can be treated if detected early.

According to researchers from the Radiation and Public Health Project who performed the study, “Fukushima fallout appeared to affect all areas of the US, and was especially large in some, mostly in the western part of the nation.” They add that CH can provide an early measure to “assess any potential changes in US fetal and infant health status after Fukushima because official data was available relatively promptly.”

Health researcher Joe Mangano similarly cautioned, “Reports of rising numbers of West Coast infants with under-active thyroid glands after Fukushima suggest that Americans may have been harmed by Fukushima fallout. Studies, especially of the youngest, must proceed immediately.”

Earlier this year, the Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey found that more than 40 percent of the Japanese children studied showed evidence of thyroid abnormalities, which Wasserman says signifies a “horrifying plague.”

Sherman and Mangano published an essay in June 2011 claiming that  the 35% spike in infant mortality in Northwest cities since the Fukushima meltdown might have been caused by radiation.

And they published a study in December 2011 in the peer-reviewed journal International Journal of Health Services, alleging that 14,000 people had already died in the United States due to Fukushima.   A Scientific American blog post and Med Page Today slammed the study as being voodoo science. However, Scientific American does admit:

Certainly radiation from Fukushima is dangerous, and could very well lead to negative health effects—even across the Pacific.

Update: ABC 10 News and MSN’s Healthy Living have picked up on the story.

This is bad journalism because you didn’t even read the article. There is a 28 percent increase in babies with hyperthyroidism, that does not mean the same thing as one third of babies being born with hyperthyroidism. Shoot first, ask questions later?

    • gozounlimited

Thyroid disorders generally accompany autoimmune disorders ….. since infants are never diagnosed with autoimmune disease one can extrapolate that the thyroid disorder discussed here occurs in utero.

  • Foppe

28% increased chance is not the same as 30% of children having..

Delighted to find your website. Great to see Dr. Gofman getting the credit he deserves. I read “Poison Power” in early 1986, when Sellafield, the huge British reprocessing plant across the Irish Sea from my then home in Dublin, was having a new accident every week or so. And, of course, Chernobyl blew up soon after.
For a year or so after Chernobyl, I could easily get the kind of letter I’ve written below published in the old media. Now I can’t, so I’m trying to also use the internet to get the info out. Scientific references for the radiation claims below are available if required. Thank you and keep up the great work.

    All the best,
    Chris Murray.

    Letter to the editor

Re: “Don’t be fooled by the spring snows, they are further proof of
global warming”. David Robert Grimes, 1st April.

    Dear Madam,

I was shouting about climate catastrophe when David Robert Grimes was barely finished shouting in nappies (“Don’t be fooled by the spring snows, they are further proof of global warming”, 1st April). That a good article was ruined by the radiation-using author’s emotional addiction to nuclear power is unsurprising. However, it is disappointing that the Irish Times yet again allows itself to be used as his propaganda mouthpiece.

The nuclear cult, not known previously for its environmental
concerns, is using legitimate alarm over global warming to stampede us into criminally wasting tens of trillions we haven’t got on thousands of nuclear poison plants we don’t need, and which won’t stop climate change. Huge numbers of these monstrosities would be sited in unstable, corrupt countries that would make even the old Soviet Union nuclear industry look like a model of efficiency and best practice. Many countries will find the temptation to build nuclear weapons irresistible. Maybe Grimes believes a nuclear winter will stop global warming.

More particularly, Grimes’s statement that “the Fukushima accident of 2011 has killed nobody and likely never will” is an ignorant, scientifically-illiterate disgrace. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) re-endorsed the Linear Non Threshold model in 2005. The ICRP advise the medical profession to estimate cancer mortality from radiation at 5% per Sievert. The collective dose from Fukushima is likely to be at least 30,000 person Sievert. The uncertainties involved in these risk estimates are not, as radiation-risk denialists such as Grimes and others seem to think, an excuse for ditching them entirely. So, establishment science (rather than the quack science of David Robert Grimes), basic logic and arithmetic would indicate the possibility that thousands of people will die from Fukushima-caused cancer over the next seventy years or so, adding to a possible death toll of tens of thousands from the Chernobyl disaster. Another crime scene?

    Yours sincerely,
    Chris Murray.

quick read of the pdf, total BS, cause they report cases, not cases/1,000 live births…
    Also, it is barely statistically significant;

there may or may not be a lot of problems in babies born in the us after fukushima; the science here doesn’t really say much one way or the other (and I’m not even getting into teh question of reporting bias – ya think there might have been more concern after fujushima in CA then in MI, and that this might have lead to more vigilance on the part of parents and peidatricians, leading to more reporting to teh state agencys ???
    ya think ????
Yves, stick to what you know; you do a great job on economics, not so much on this

I remember hearing this after Fukushima.. The only thing the EPA did was raise the ‘safe level’ of nuclear radiation after Fukushima. Can you see how WRONG the EPA was and is? These are the same people that insist fluoride is safe in our drinking water.

Japan offered to enrich uranium for Iran’s reactors. Immediately, Magna, an Israeli security company bid on the contract at Fukushima and won. They showed up with very large, heavy devices that they claimed were cameras to monitor the reactor up close in the containment building. The camera looks very similar to a gun-type mini-nuke. After Israeli security team left there was an explosion in the Japanese Trench just offshore. Claims of 9.1 were contradicted by readings in the 5-6′s, and the devastation that should follow such a monster quake should have leveled many cities in Japan but contemporary videos did not show that.

When the tsunami hit all but one of the generators were disabled, but one would been enough to keep all the cooling pumps running. besides the residual heat from the reactor would keep steam moving to keep to run the secondary generators. For some reason the technicians could not get the valves to open. The Siemens valves are vulnerable to the Stuxnet worm which must be planted in the computer system with a thumb-drive. Stuxnet had already been found in Japan several months earlier and was first found destroying the centrifuge arrays in Iran and then China and Indonesia. Israel has been identified as a likely participant in the development of Stuxnet.

When the reactors were exploded, the blast shattered reinforced concrete walls 8-10′ thick. Hydrogen gas explosions that were blamed do not cause such destruction when the more vulnerable roof would go first. Besides, the towers next to the reactor buildings are are for dumping hydrogen gas that might build up in a reactor. Photos show that at least two of the reactors are no longer there…destroyed. And the blast cloud was much more like that of a mini-nuke than a H2 explosion.

The official story has too many holes in it and does not adequately explain what can be observed. Iran was finding a friendly ally to help them get their nuclear industries going. Now, not only Japan, but others will be wary because THEY can see that the official story is weak and add up the anomalies. Japan has probably been told to go along with the embarrassingly lame story because they might fear attacks from offshore that would decimate their nation.

its not just fukashima, its weapons grade microwave frequencies via the smartgrid.we are all suffering damage under the constant permanent and increasing cell stress we are now under 24/7 and they are adding to these netwarks daily with intelligent “smart” street lights, energy star appliances communicating with the smartmeters and routers via the zigbee chip, and the addition of several huge apartment complexes being erected with 100-300 + of these microwave transmitting thyroid killing smartmeters, and wifi in every single school.they are now ,instead of wiring the computers back in to prevent the heartattacks occuring with our school age children, requiring defibrilators in every school.at the same time, the cell phone network is being increased, cell towers on school properties,on every corner, wifi in every coffee shop, public building, ect.the vaccine schedule has increased at the same time, not one ingredient in them that isnt a toxin.our food is now genetically modified, processed and chemicalized for shelf life, and what “fresh” food is available,to some,is no longer nutrient dense and saturated with herbicides pesticides and fungicides.as forclosures continue, huge apartment complexes are being erected in every place they can fit one, leveling trees ,wildlife, and native habitat all across my state.no trees,no oxygen.their “sustainability” projects brought us the toxic cfl light bulbs, emiting dangerous levels of electrosmog as well as phenols and mercury when disposed of or broken,or crushed as they are at most of these corporate owned apartment complexes that now own most of the properties along wetlands and waterways here.we have to stop these ICLEI “sustainable” smartcity agendas before our planet is reduced to a resource pumping machine, void of life, for the profit of the corporations that now, with the help of our local and federal governments, own us.if we dont stop this, our childrens future is terrifying

My favorite scientist takes issue: “This is bad science. They only compared to one other year, thus ignoring
all the natural variability that occurs in CH from year to year. Why
don’t the show a chart with CH overtime as far back as the records go?
To compare to just the previous year ignores all the rules in trend
analysis and likely explains why this was published in a non-peer
    reviewed journal. “

thyroids intake iodine and radiated iodine particles absorb more quickly than non radiated ones, its not rocket science people. Its like slicing your finger with a knife and then pondering if the knife was actually involved. Radiation kills people, causes cancer and damages organs. Currents bring the radioactive water and trash through the Pacific and settles on the West Coast and Hawaii. Babies are born with thyroid complications at a higher rate than before Fukushima. If you can’t do the math, educate yourself before you speak.

really, its a 28% increase of hyperthryoid disease in infants… this is not near a 28% for the whole population. This article is written to be extremely alarmist! Now I dont know exactly what percent of infants have hyperthyroid but lets just say in general its 1% of the population. So you see, increasing 1% by 28 percent is not very much overall. I think much of this could be prevented if the mother supplemented with lugols iodine during pregnancy

  • Destroyer of worlds

Bring it on… Part of me will be laughing at you monkeys with your head in the sand. Deny deny deny. It will be hard to ignore the consequences of Fukushima when it comes knocking at your door. 1300+ fuel rods need to be removed from the site… WITHOUT INCIDENT! No mistakes over 40 or more years… You believe that is even possible? Do you? They have been dumping SEAWATER onto the reactors for two & a half years. Corroded racks… Corroded zirconium alloy cladding on the fuel rods… Destroyed equipment. It’s a 1000 to 1 long shot. Yet because of our ignorance and sheer stupidity, we can’t see the truth through the fog. We will get what we deserve. A true Apocalypse. Ohhh well…. We need a big natural selection event anyways. Many many millions will die, but mostly the stupid since they make up the majority. GOOD RIDDANCE. Maybe pray to your fairytale gods for a miracle because that’s your only hope.

This is dangerously incompetent reporting. 28% increase in RELATIVE risk does NOT mean 1/3rd of babies born will have problems! This article should be retracted in its entirety.
