“I Really Want To Punch The Guy Who Designed That Website. It’s Some Ugly Ass Web 1.0 Shit”

Design Help Wanted …

A commenter liked one of our recent posts, but slammed our design:

Makes Sense. On another note, I really want to punch the guy who designed that website. It’s some ugly ass Web 1.0 shit.

We’ve repeatedly admitted that we have the design sense of an earthworm (you should have seen the site before one of our friends improved it!), and would be grateful for any help making the site look more attractive.

Any takers?

well noone has a gun to his head forcing him to come here – but if you want to change things… go to dashboard – appearance – themes.. pick one!

otherwise leave it as it is.. and take the petty criticism for what its worth .

i personally dont come here for eye candy.. and i see no problem wit the easy to navigate / read layout at all.

Dylan Ratigan’s site looks good copy it but make it your own.

It’s fine, leave it alone. Anyone who gives a damn about having ‘ugly ass Web 1.0 shit’ here ( OMG ! Web 1.0 ! The sheer horroooooooooor, girls ! How about some Flash animations and a perfume counter ? ) has her tiny mind so dominated with utter bullshit fashion trivia she’s beyond rational hope anyway.

WordPress is now shipping with Twenty Eleven as the default theme but there are many other (free) themes available. You can pick a theme, try it, and discard it very easily.

The design is wordpress generic but the logo/banner is not (could be referred to Web 1.0 even).
But I would like to punch idiots that cant see the difference from ‘Banner/Logo’ and ‘design’.

So lets have a banner contest instead.
Anyone less graphically handicapped then the norm to make a banner??
    (970px × 140px about 50Kb in size)
    Theme i can think of:
twin towers falling down like the ball in NY announcing the Fiscal Cliff 2013 but rolling everywhere on the planet

I don’t care what your website looks like. I care about what the content is, and it is gloriously educating. Keep it simple, real, and to the point. Thank you for all of your work and mind opening journalism.

  • davebygolly

yeah, KISS, loads fast, nothing to distract from content.

  • The AntiGlobalist

I wouldn’t listen to that criticism. It’s irrelevant. This site is all about content. That’s why it’s the last place on the web I visit nearly every day.

You have a great amount of awesome content. We use cyberchimps themes for xcannabis.com

I don’t give a rip about the appearance. It’s the content I value, and I agree with the poster who appreciates the fast downloading.

  • Bobby Morrison

Who the hell cares? I don’t. I don’t come here for fluff. I like the simplicity, I come here for the content, not gingerbread.

  • Ed Hurst

It’s all about the content. I’m not sure what tiny shred of minority I am, but I typically read this blog with Lynx — colored text on a black background (via Cygwin). I have to use a graphical browser in those rare moments when I want to post a comment, but my sentiments often put me on another planet from you and most of your commenters. Still, the point is I come here to read, not see pretty stuff. If your underlying technology becomes unreadable in Lynx, I won’t bother coming any more.

It’s not ugly. I think all the bells and whistles some sites use just hog band width and slow things to a crawl. So many of them are so buggy that they are constantly cause crashes. You, on occasion have had imbedded films launch every time I open the site, but that is the worst that has ever happened on your site. Stay clean and simple. This site is not some Prison Planet thing that needs flashing lights to give credence. This site is ideas, not distractions. Stay the way you are.

Some earnest young man from the government will be along shortly to assist.

What, me worry? (that’s to let you know I’m joking).

  • Tony Scott

Your website design is not deficient but the vocabulary of the critic certainly is.

  • gordon

No. Your site is fine the way it is.

my partner blogs on wordpress and she was the victim of the same (probable) scam yesterday; this is what spammers do: they post comments attacking your site, generally to drum up business for themselves; it’s especially prevalent on wordpress sites.

I do agree, it’s not intuitive and titles are hard to find. I’m already get used to this extraordinary blog, but a little graphic change is well coming from my side, :-)

  • kate

A little late to the party, but see most of the comment here agree – don’t you go changing, you’re perfect as you are.

I pretty much agree with the rest of the comments, who cares!? It’s all about the content and very minimal on visualization. It’s definitely a lot better than a lot of other websites I’ve seen or have fixed myself from other people leaving horrible design in the backend, coding-wise. And I’ve been a subscriber to this site for quite awhile and the content is always awesome, so keep up the great work! I could send ya a couple header banners for ya, just let me know where I could send them, that would help in the ‘attractiveness’, but like I said, keep up the content, that’s the key!

Just my opinion, but wash. blog has the potential to become the Drudge of blogs. With that opinion I’d keep the current design.

Looks are not important. Looks never define a person, actions do, and your actions are way more important than the way the site looks. Please don’t miss the forest by the trees!!–Remember : keep it simple stupid!!–Thank you guys!!!

It’s true. I couldn’t put my finger on it until I read the quote. There was something about this website that made not want to read stuff and now I know what it is……it is simply the design. I think you should have it fixed.
