A Visual Tour of the Fuel Pools of Fukushima

Do You Know What the Fuel Pools Actually Look Like?

You already know that Fukushima’s fuel pool number 4 may be the single greatest threat, but that pool number 3 is very dangerous as well.

You’ve heard that unit 3′s fuel pool contains less radioactive material than unit 4 … but still a tremendous amount of radiation. Scientific American reported last year:

The pools at each reactor are thought to have contained the following amounts of spent fuel, according to The Mainichi Daily News:

• Reactor No. 1: 50 tons of nuclear fuel
• Reactor No. 2: 81 tons
Reactor No. 3: 88 tons
Reactor No. 4: 135 tons
• Reactor No. 5: 142 tons
• Reactor No. 6: 151 tons
• Also, a separate ground-level fuel pool contains 1,097 tons of fuel; and some 70 tons of nuclear materials are kept on the grounds in dry storage.

You’ve learned that unit 3′s reactor was the only one at Fukushima which burned plutonium. As Japan Times notes:

Reactor 3 … uses highly dangerous mixed oxide fuel, Tokyo Electric has reported.

***

No. 3 reactor is the only one at the crippled power station that was powered by the plutonium-uranium MOX

You’ve gotten the fact that – if the water drains out for any reason – it will cause a fire in the fuel rods, as the zirconium metal jacket on the outside of the fuel rods could very well catch fire within hours or days after being exposed to air. See this, this, this and this. (And that even a large solar flare could knock out the water-circulation systemsfor the pools.)

You’ve listened to experts say that – unless the rods are removed from the fuel pools before a major earthquake strikes (using special equipment which keeps the rods submerged in water the whole time) – they will likely catch fire and release huge amounts of radioactivity. See this and this – starting at 4 minutes into the video.

You’ve read that – after reviewing photos from several different angles – the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s initial impressions were that spent fuel pool number 3 might not be there at all, and that nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen said a couple of days ago:

Unit 3 is worse [than No. 4]. It’s mechanically its rubble, the pool is rubble. It’s got less fuel in it. It faces the same problem. Structurally the pool has been dramatically weakened. And, god nobody has even gotten near it yet.

And you may caught the recent headline that a 35-ton machine fell into spent fuel pool 3. As Kyodo News reports:

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Friday found that a 35-ton machine had dropped inside the spent fuel pool of the No. 3 unit, possibly because of a hydrogen explosion that occurred in the early stage of plant’s nuclear accident last year.

Tokyo Electric Power Co., commonly known as TEPCO, reported the finding after placing a camera inside the water-filled pool the same day to prepare for removing, as part of the decommissioning process, the nuclear fuel stored there.

One photo showed part of the machine, originally located above the pool and used to insert and remove fuel, appeared to have dropped onto the nuclear fuel storage racks.

But – until you see pictures – it is hard to get a sense of what all this means.

Here’s a picture just released by Tepco of the giant machine in the fuel pool :

Part of a refueling structure photographed April 13 in the spent fuel storage pool of the No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant (Provided by Tokyo Electric Power Co.)

And another new Tepco photo showing other tangled wreckage inside the pool:

Part of a refueling structure photographed April 13 in the spent fuel storage pool of the No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant (Provided by Tokyo Electric Power Co.)

The following graphics from Ashai news show how the crane is normally used to move spent fuel rods in and out of the pool. Here’s the crane bringing in a special container to hold the rods:

Loading spent fuel rods into the container:

The crane then lifts the rod-carrying container up:

And then away from the pool:

Keep in mind that the machine which fell into pool number 3 was part of the crane “used to insert and remove fuel”, and so now there is no easy way to remove the fuel from the fuel pool. And the crane at unit 4 is also broken:

Still confused?

Let’s look at some more pictures …

Before the Quake

Here is where the fuel pools are located in the Fukushima reactors:

Here are pictures Unit 3′s fuel pool before the earthquake, and the fuel pool crane:

This shot is during repairs at reactor 4 before the earthquake – but gives a sense of scale:

Boiled dry: This shot shows of the inside of reactor number four at the Fukushima nuclear plant before the disaster. The spent fuel storage pool is seen at the front of the shot. The rods are at the bottom of the pool, which has now boiled dry

After the Quake

Here is the green fuel pool crane at unit 4 after the earthquake:

The view from above the crane at fuel pool 4:

An overview shows smoke rising from the interior of reactor No. 4 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex in this still image taken from a March 24, 2011 handout video released on April 1, 2011.

(“SFP” in these photos refers to the spent fuel pool.)

Former fuel pool nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen notes that – for at least some period after the earthquake – the fuel pool had insufficient water, and the nuclear rods were sticking out into the air:

Here is water later being poured into fuel pool 4:

Reactor 3 is a mess:

HouseofOust notes of this picture:

Oval is the reactor well location. Lines on the left side of the image outline the crane that seems to have fallen over or been crushed. Spent fuel pool outlined in the foreground.

And of this picture:

Perspective lines are drawn to show where the deck should be and how much is gone. A circle shows the beam apex to appoximate the reactor well. Spent fuel pool is again seen off to the right and outlined. Marked structure in the foreground is the end of the refueling crane.

Now can you see what’s going on?

It also shows that psychopaths can make it to the tops of world governments, and then stay there behind the scenes.

It is my personal experience that it is mainly psychopaths who float to the top as most of the rest of us have moral constraints that forbid us to compete on an equal footing. Of all the managers I have worked for, very few of them were morally honest. And those few were the people I gave my loyalty to.

We are now living under daily radiation, chemical and biological siege. Because so much of this is invisible, it may be difficult for many people to comprehend the enormity of what is happening throughout our environment. The on-going catastrophe at Japan’s Fukushima ruined nuclear reactors continues to affect our entire planet. From the very beginning and behind the scenes of this epic crisis, the real reasons were deliberately covered-up. Safety factors were omitted, citizens continue to be put in harm’s way in Japan, throughout North America, and the rest of the planet. Mainstream Orwellian news is worthless in terms of reporting the magnitude and real dangers involved; so the public has never been properly informed. As with the on-going BP Gulf of Mexico oil-rig catastrophe, all we get as citizens are distortions and deception. Safe ways of handling this nightmare or real precaution were deliberately not part of any “emergency” plan.

We did not come into this world to create harm and havoc, nor be any part of it. No matter where we live on this planet, we do not raise our children this way. We came to make this a far better world, to achieve the highest good possible –not one of illegal invasions and DU bombings of innocent citizens, lethal vaccines, and a warrior mentality devoid of ethics. This is NOT what we want to leave to our children. We do not want to raise them, or have the state take away our rights as parents and raise them, for cannon fodder, lies, and deceit. We must reject the darkness of Darth Vader and stop Borg geo-engineered technologies.

I do not want to see our [in the collective sense] children damaged by breathing chemicals that take away their ability to think clearly or eating foods that poison and cripple their bodies and cut their lives short. I do not want to see an EMF or chemical-brain injury induced “vacant stare” in my students’ eyes. We must replace a horrific invasive mercenary and military code of theft of countries and killing with a peaceful code of ethical behavior. We must reclaim and reinforce our responsibilities of guiding our children, setting examples of Courage and Love, so that they and their children (all our progeny!) will truly have a world to inherit and live out their own lives in peace, harmony, creativity, and tranquility. This is in our individual hands and it is for the greater good of all humanity.

What is behind the forced extinction of man?

Haters of Humanity: The Church of Malthus
Hating humanity is their creed, corporate-fascists its patriarchs, pseudo-scientists its priest-class, brain-addled cultists its practitioners.

Video: Church of Malthus evangelist, Paul Gilding in his “the Earth is Full” talk, tells us one million years of human progress has “finally” reached its limits. This is a tale that has been fallaciously told for at least the last 200 years since crackpot economist Thomas Malthus warned of imminent societal collapse based on a growing population – a prediction, like those of a suicidal doomsday cult, that has been demonstratively and repeatedly proven wrong. Gilding also attempts to link “climate change” in as a manifestation of our reached limits. (Don’t forget climate change is caused by geoengineering …. a choice (a bankster derivative choice … ripping off California farmers with short positions) … not a affliction caused by population.)

      Carbon trading is a scam.
      Global Research, December 11, 2008
      George Washington Blog

Whether you believe in man-made global warming or not, please realize that carbon trading is a scam.

A big red flag is that our bailout buddies over at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and the other Wall Street pirates are buying heavily into carbon trading.

Since these firms contributed so heavily to Obama’s campaign, they will exert enormous pressure
on Obama to push a huge carbon trading program. As University of Maryland professor economics professor and former Chief Economist at the U.S. International Trade Commission Peter Morici writes:

Obama must ensure that the banks use the trillions of dollars in federal bailout assistance to renegotiate mortgages and make new loans to worthy homebuyers and businesses. Obama must make certain that banks do not continue to squander federal largess by padding executive bonuses, acquiring other banks and pursuing new high-return, high-risk lines of businesses in merger activity, carbon trading and complex derivatives. Industry leaders like Citigroup have announced plans to move in those directions. Many of these bankers enjoyed influence in and contributed generously to the Obama campaign. Now it remains to be seen if a President Obama can stand up to these same bankers and persuade or compel them to act responsibly.

Connections between the Bain companies and the “green” agenda are astounding.

The Bain & Company website boasts the consulting firm’s expertise in the nonprofit and public sector and states, “Experts agree that climate change and environmental degradation must be tackled on a global scale.”

      read more: http://www.examiner.com/conservative-in-minneapolis/more-than-a-gaffe-romney-exposed?fb_comment=34280351

No doubt their expertise came in handy at the World Economic Forum where Bain offered insights on “Clean energy technologies” and a “low-carbon energy mix by 2050.”

Though not controversial for a consulting firm to be interested in conserving energy, the Bain Company seems to have a particular affinity for carbon credit trading, which would have occurred on the Chicago Climate Exchange, had the Cap and Trade bill passed last year. (Learn Obama’s involvement here.)

I can no longer watch the Weather Channel …. They now have a TOR:CON index (and it is a con!) magically providing data showing who the next storm victim will be and how hard they will be hit ….. obviously since they can see the HAARP activity on the weather radar loop see here: http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php ….. and have access to models describing the coming the geoengineered event.

It is apparent a six figure income can make you keep your mouth shut …. a shame because people are dying….lives being destroyed…while evil men and women get rich on your victimization….makes me sick!

  • ambrit

    Friends;
Having worked on mid-sized commercial construction projects in the past, what stopps me is the enormity of the challenge the radiation poses to the clean up. On any other construction project, after such a disaster, the clean up crew would have been busy at work immediately after. That the best the locals could do was a kamikazi like fire brigade action shows that conditions at the plant are much worse than ‘officially’ reported. At the least, crews would be clearing out the areas surrounding the centre of the site to facilitate later efforts. Also, no well points being driven around the site to pump out contaminated groundwater to decontamination and storage sites suggests that the disaster is orders of magnitude greater than imagined. So little is apparently being done. Either we are dealing with total idiots, or there is a lot more to conceal. It’s time to internationalize this clean up process. Let the UN declare it an International Disaster and take over. Sometimes, one world government is the right way to go.

  • ambrit

    Friends;
One other question I would dearly like to know the answer to; Do any parts of the plant glow in the dark? Any Kerenkov radiation zipping about? Pictures of the place after dark would be instructive, and informative.

  • prophit

I would not hold my breath on this subject. First of all there is plenty out that that shows this was definitely an inside job by You know who…. who are the loonies on this planet? It was the Stutz virus deal used on Iran, and security for those plants was Israel. Then it was proven the tsumani did not act like a tsunami which means it was caused by methods other than natural response to the so called event. Then there was evidence of Haarp activiation with photos of the sky just before the event occurred. Next, Dutchsinse went out with 3 high tech geigercounters and travelled all over the country to measure radiation and it read normal 3 weeks after the event. Then MIT did an analysis , based on science, by their nuke engineers of the potential radiation and what would reach our coast. It was very informative and a lot less of a problem then what the powers that be are making it out to be. FEAR IS WHAT THEY ARE SELLING HERE. Fear and rational thought cannot occupy the same space. One of those reactors was not even operational anymore. A lot has come out about all of this and I would be happy to send you the links if anyone wants them see just how bogus all of this really is and its serving its purpose.

What were the Japanese thinking when they opted for nuclear power? When I was in the U.S. Navy (01JUL1965 – 01MAR1971) the Japanese would not allow any U.S. nuclear powered vessels in their ports. They had a bad experience with nuclear devices in August, 1945. They didn’t even want nuke electric generating plants, we were told. It seems that they were sold a bill of goods. First, with all the seismic activity in and around their country why would they want them. Second, why would they not demand that the plants be built to withstand a 10 on the open ended Richter scale. Third, goes back to August , 1945 why would you want those god-awful things?

  • Douglas Milholland

Breathing in radioactive hot particles that lodge in the body is very different than getting a chest x ray. Fukushima contains hundreds of tons of highly radioactive materials, which can ruin human ability to reproduce healthily. Arne Gunderson(http://fairewinds.com/) believe the clean-up/ safe storage of the spent fuel rods will require new technology, and that the likelihood of a seismic 7 or greater event damaging the spent fuel ponds is very high. Tepco does not have the ability to draft hundreds of thousands of people to fight this extremely dangerous industrial accident(as the Soviets did at Chernobyl). This is a world crisis. The US govt should join this real war & fuggetabout the military industrial congressional media weapons selling cartel circus act selling fear the Iranians blah blah blah. If we love this planet we need to demand an international co-operative effort focusing on the absolute need to deal with the fukushima disaster – before it gets worse!

Only true psychopaths would still back up and promote the nuclear industry and their mass-murdering madness, like e.g. Obama, who granted the bumbling, lying and inept madmen of TEPCO license to build new NPPs in America … AFTER Fukushima Daiichi was blown to smithereens and TEPCO along with our mainstream media presstitutes tried to cover it up.

Take it straight from the horse’s mouth … a quote (from 1982) of the famous health-physicist and co-discoverer of Plutonium at the Manhattan Project, the late Dr. John W. Gofman: »Licensing a NPP is in my view, licensing premeditated murder. First of all, when you license a plant, you know what you’re doing — so it’s premeditated. You can’t say, “I didn’t know.” Second, evidence on radiation-producing cancer is beyond doubt. I’ve worked 15 years on it. It’s not a question any more: radiation produces cancer … all the way down to the lowest doses!«

    • Kelly

Not necessarily, we live in a universe awash with radiation. Many people live their entire lives and don’t get cancer.

      • Nexusfast123

If you travelled in an unlined spaceship you would not live very long. As a species I guess we have evolved to tolerate the natural background radiation but any release as a result of a screw up at Fukshima would change that.

  • A free mind

From those pictures it is evident steam is leaking from the spent fuel pool – does this steam carry radiation for starters.

Secondly from what I’ve read if this spent fuel become too close to each other it could basically cause a nuclear reaction that result in a nuclear explosion…………..now I would assume that they have to remove the top of what’s left of the building…..again releasing radiation, then they have to remove the fuel rods potentially in the open again releasing radiation, and exactly how much radiation is this that is being released, I’ve read it is 14,0000 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb……………..are people in Japan dying yet as the media seem to be very quiet about this.

    • sputnik

The top of the building is already gone, so they shouldn’t have a big problem removing it. The concern comes from the spent (and fresh) fuel rods coming into contact with the air, since there is no water to cool them. There is a high likelihood of this happening, since the fuel rod pool is about 100 feet in the air, in a crumbling building that might be on top of a developing sinkhole, in a place that has a 95% chance of a magnitude 7 or stronger earthquake happening in the next three years, and since they can’t just leave them like that, they are about to start the daunting process of removing them and placing them in the plant’s common pool.

Essentially, this is probably the worst situation anyone could ever ask for at a nuclear power plant. And we sit idly behind our computers struggling to understand the situation…

Yes, that steam is probably carrying heavy metals (plutonium, cesium) in it.

Yes, workers have been exposed to beyond the allowed limit of radiation while conducting the reconstruction work. Increased cases of thyroid disease have developed around the Fukushima prefecture. Irradiated tune have been caught off the west coast of America, and seals around Alaska and North Pole have been discovered to have lesions and sudden hair loss. Maybe no one has died from acute radiation exposure, but the affects will be around for centuries to come.

I don’t remember how I got started spending the last two and a half hours reading about this, filling the title bar of my browser with open tabs, but I implore you to educate yourself as much as you can if you’re curious. Then, depending on how you feel, you may want to consider signing this petition: https://fs220.xbit.jp/n362/form2/

Telling others how to live their lives in a condescending manner, calling people names, and reducing complex, broad spectrum social and economic constructs to simplistic stereotypes painted with a broad brush can also be a considered an addiction of small minded, immature people who can’t help but be pitied.

Amen brother. So, let’s explain this to President Obama and the rest of the federal government who think they should tell us what to eat, drink and what kind of healthcare policy we need to own.

I am tired of the arrogance of Science. No one has the right to endanger the whole world to produce energy. It’s arrogance to think we could handle this technology and foolish to think that one country has the right to endanger life on the entire planet because the reactor is on their territory. The world must abolish nuclear energy as a crime against our planet. And don’t even bother with the silly nuclear energy is the only viable solution argument in order to maintain the energy we need, we could do something really radical and almost as difficult. We can change ourselves and our own behavior. Use less energy.

it is not science or scientists who are arrogant. It is the big money corporations, trying to get more money by perverting science; those are the arrogant ones.

      • liltimmy

it’s the government that is arrogant, nuclear was not originally intended for energy, the U.S. government intended to use it as a weapon from the start, clean energy is just a cover up story
