Even Israel Admits that Iran Has Not Decided to Build a Nuclear Bomb

Despite Misleading Hype, No Government Leaders Think that Iran Is Building a Nuclear Bomb

American and European leaders say that there is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon.

Even Israel – which has threatened to attack Iran on its own – now admits the same thing.

As Haaretz noted on January 18th:

The intelligence assessment Israeli officials will present later this week to [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin ] Dempsey indicates that Iran has not yet decided whether to make a nuclear bomb.

The Israeli view is that while Iran continues to improve its nuclear capabilities, it has not yet decided whether to translate these capabilities into a nuclear weapon – or, more specifically, a nuclear warhead mounted atop a missile. Nor is it clear when Iran might make such a decision.

Your headline is misleading. It implies that Iran Israel believes that has affirmatively decided not to build a nuclear bomb.

That is obviously false. On the contrary, Israel believes it is highly likely that Iran is enriching uranium precisely for the purpose of building a bomb. Otherwise, why would they be concerned that Iran is evidently enriching uranium beneath a giant mountain. I don’t suppose you believe Iran is risking annihilation so it it can produce medical isotopes, do you? Or, if you do, do you find that to be a rational course of action?

You are confusing evidence and belief or likelihood. One can easily make a judgment of likelihood without having affirmative evidence.

I promise that you do it every day.

Israel simply wants regime change in Iran. Iran wants to be in a position to build a bomb if it is threatened or attacked. Israel doesn’t want Iran to be in this position either. But so far Iran hasn’t made the decision to build nuclear weapons. I believe, with Chomsky, that despite my hatred of nuclear weapons, in this context it would be better if Iran were armed with a nuclear capability. Then we would be back to good old MAD as per the Cold War. Israel would be less tempted to attack Iran if it had nuclear weapons. Remember that world public opinion holds that Israel is the most dangerous state in the world, followed by the USA. By this I mean most likely to precipitate a nuclear or any other war with little or no provocation. The USA has been directly or indirectly responsible for 20 millions war deaths since WW2, so we know the US’s record of warmongering. Israel, which is ruled by a paranoid and hysterical warrior class that sees offense and provocation everywhere, is constantly threatening war against Islamic states in the region. In addition, most commentators agree that Israel now dictates US foreign policy to its advantage. Israel cannot “annihilate” Iran. Again most commentators hold that Iran is already the most powerful state in the region. I’ve no doubt they’ve secreted their facilities inside the mountain to protect them from Israel’s and US weapons. Should they choose to use them for producing nuclear weapons in the future then Israel has only itself to blame.
