Ron Paul: “The PATRIOT Act Was Written Many, Many Years Before 9/11 [And The Attacks Simply Provided] An Opportunity for Some People To Do What They Wanted To Do”

Ron Paul: Patriot Act, Wars Planned Before 9/11

Politico notes:

Ron Paul isn’t backing down from his position that the U.S. has provoked terrorists through foreign military occupation and that officials tried to capitalize on Sept. 11 attacks.

“Think of what happened after 9/11, the minute before there was any assessment, there was glee in the administration because now we can invade Iraq, and so the war drums beat,” Paul said Thursday night before a packed room of more than 1,000 students and supporters. “That’s exactly what they’re doing now with Iran.”

***

His libertarian ideals have struck a cord with many, but conservatives remain deeply wary of Paul’s foreign policy positions, including his assertion that the U.S. provoked the Sept. 11 attacks by maintaining military bases in foreign countries. Paul’s position as the lone dove in the GOP race has made him a foil for some of his hawkish Republican opponents.

“Extremists have taken over, and they’re the ones who run the foreign policy and have convinced us to go along with all these wars,” Paul said Wednesday night.

Paul said that claims Iran could be developing a nuclear weapon are just part of an effort to scare Americans into going to war again.

Paul said of the possibility that Iran has a nuclear weapon is “not true at all.” “It doesn’t mean they might not want a nuclear weapon.”

No other country, Paul said, is capable of attacking the United States.

“How many foreign countries can threaten us right now?” Paul asked sarcastically. “How many are likely to invade us or drop a bomb on us? I can’t imagine.”

***

“The PATRIOT Act was written many, many years before 9/11,” Paul said. The attacks simply provided “an opportunity for some people to do what they wanted to do,” he said.

***

“I wish we could guarantee a democratic and honest election in this country as well,” Paul said. “The democratic process in this country has a long way to go.”

Mr. Paul is right:

  • The Afghanistan war was planned before 9/11 (see this and this)
  • The Patriot Act was planned before 9/11. Indeed, former Counter Terrorism Czar Richard Clarke told Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig:

After 9/11 the government drew up the Patriot Act within 20 days and it was passed.

The Patriot Act is huge and I remember someone asking a Justice Department official how did they write such a large statute so quickly, and of course the answer was that it has been sitting in the drawers of the Justice Department for the last 20 years waiting for the event where they would pull it out.

I will stand behind him in the polls when he stands behind the truth about 9/11.
He has quite the opportunity here to make some change even if its just awareness.

Jay R., I really believe that you should stand behind him now, as Paul is by far the most likely to make this happen once he’s in office, whether or not he says anything about it now.

Under the guise of fighting terrorism, the Patriot Act was adopted WITHOUT public approval or vote just weeks after the events of 9/11. Such an unconstitutional set of laws should be abolished seeing as they violate human rights and due process. A mere 3 criminal charges of terrorism a year attributed to this act, which is mainly used for no-knock raids leading to drug-related arrests without proper cause for search and seizure. The laws are simply a means to spy on our own citizens and to detain and torture dissidents without trial or a right to council. You can read much more about living in this Orwellian society of fear and see my visual response to these measures on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/living-in-society-of-fear-ten-years.html

one issue? I laughed so hard I spit coffee on my keyboard.

Don’t divide his supporters and detractors between libertarian or conservative lines. He doesn’t operate along party lines and neither do his supporters.

There was 600 people in the great hall on Thursday, any more would have been against the fire codes.

    The Patriot Act is Treason.

  • John D

The one-issue voter point is valid, especially when they will continue to vote for the party that talks tha one issue without actually working to fix the one issue when in power… like abortion, deficits, etc

Here’s who helped write the Patriot Act as far as I can tell:

Biden himself draws parallels between his 1995 bill and its 2001 cousin. “I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing. And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill,” he said when the Patriot Act was being debated, according to the New Republic, which described him as “the Democratic Party’s de facto spokesman on the war against terrorism.”

Funny because it was written before the OKC Bombing actually.
    OKC bombing: April 19, 1995.
    Bill submitted: Feb. 10, 1995.

And these guys probably helped out at some level by coming up with parts of it as well:

It seems pretty clear by now that the 2000 elections were a legal coup, based on planning dating back to the Reagan years. Reagan’s “Restricted Interagency Group,” his “Rex 84″ exercise, followed by Clinton’s Presidential Decision Directive 67, “Continuity of Operations” planning, and Bush II’s Homeland Security Presidential Directive are the executive arm of a parallel system of government and administration being established apart from the constitution. The program’s legislative counterparts are in the 2006 Military Commissions Act, which set up a parallel system of justice with different rules for the admissibility of evidence, which contained an unconstitutional attack on habaes corpus, and challenged posse comitatus. Obama has retained this parallel system of government and maintained the privilege to arbitrarily decide what system of justice detainees are to be subject to. S.1867, sections 1031 and 1032 — which just passed the senate last week, continue to replace due process protections in accordance with the expanded executive powers claimed by Bush and Obama (through actions such as extrajudicial assasinations of US citizens). As Senators Ron Wyden and Mark Udall have claimed, there may also be a classified interpretation of the PATRIOT ACT, perhaps formulated along the lines of the legal theories advanced by John Yoo, which used legal maneuvering to undermine the law — mainly, our obligations under the Geneva Conventions, torture, and domestic surveillance (the 4th Amendment seems to be toast). Under Clinton, the passage of CALEA ensured that the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure would function as a massive surveillance system — this was passed before the Internet was on anybody’s radar. It’s minutes to midnight.

Close-minded voters…part of the reason the US will never get out of the shambles it is in.

Sorry, Bush II’s HSPD 51, which superseded Clinton’s PDD 67.

  • Paul

    Billy,

Let’s see…. 1) Patriot Act and spying on Americans, 2) Foreign Policies, 3) Iraq War, 4) Executive Power, 5) Clean elections

Seems this post is discussing at least 5 issues. Maybe the problem is that voters can’t count?

  • Rich Pryor

And yet, the government had nothing to do with the attacks on 9/11.

Just a fortuitous occurrence that enabled their agenda.

  • B York

During the Clinton administration, a very similar bill was proposed and would have passed but for Republican opposition. After the Patriot Act was passed, the DOJ had numerous conferences and training activities devoted to using provisions of the bill against not “terrorism” but its “war on drugs.” The bill is just a wish list born of the authoritarian police state mentality that is driving the fascist takeover of this country and the West.

We find it appalling that the they would be in a state of glee. But sense then we also found our dead troop remains in a landfill. What Ron Paul say’s is true, It always has been and still is. We are expendable to our Govt.

  • James Andrews

@Billy … no, we are in shambles because our reps have no regard for the interests of the people, and our media has been successful at keeping people sufficiently brainwashed to keep voting for the incumbents.

  • opie

Ron Paul has no chance, and he has my support.

  • Lee

It sounds almost like hes suggesting the 9/11 attacks were planned from the inside. I dought he will go that for or he’ll be screwed.

    • Jack Sprat

The Cabal does not need to PLAN them or DIRECT them, my friend. They just need to make sure that nobody PREVENTS them.

  • Grant

One-issue voters are definitely partially to blame for why our democracy is so flawed right now. Both parties know they can pass bill X easily, as long as they also support the completely unrelated issue Y that mainstream media is constantly talking about.

“Perfect, he hates abortion as much as me! I’ll vote him into office and let him lead our military into unjustified wars and pass unconstitutional bills, because I know that he won’t let pregnant women abort their babies!”

Look at the big picture when choosing a president.
Consider the type of supreme court justice he or she will appoint. Would you agree with that justice on issues?
Consider who he or she will be turning to for economic advice. Do you tend to agree with what they argue for?
What does he or she say about our current international conflicts and potential future wars/conflicts? Are they just focused on border protection or do they want to send our troops all over the world and hypocritically teach other nations how to run a perfect democracy?

“………the US provoked Terrorists” ?????? Tell me exactly, how do you provoke yourself?

  • Charles Magus

The US didn’t provoke any Terrorists as they were ordered by Israel to Carry out the Attacks by the zionists within the Neo-cons and it was Israel’s MOSSAD that planted the Explosives throughout the buildings!! Israel and the Rothschild Parasitic Dynasty are the enemy of all Nations! Especially America, so stop fucking funding a Terrorist, Apartheid Totalitarian Regime that is Israel!!

  • Rynstone

    Charlie,
You better get back on your meds. Who flew the planes? What did Israel have to gain by bringing down the towers?
