A Chill Descends on Occupy Wall Street: The Tangled Purse Strings
by Fritz Tucker
On Sunday, October 23, a meeting was held at 60 Wall Street. Six leaders discussed what to do with the half-million dollars that had been donated to their organization, since, in their estimation, the organization was incapable of making sound financial decisions. The proposed solution was not to spend the money educating their co-workers or stimulating more active participation by improving the organization’s structures and tactics. Instead, those present discussed how they could commandeer the $500,000 for their new, more exclusive organization. No, this was not the meeting of any traditional influence on Wall Street. These were six of the leaders of Occupy Wall Street (OWS)….
I’ve attended two mock Spokes Councils in the past month. At the Spokes Council in Washington Square Park on October 15, the unelected facilitators set the agenda: Occupy Washington Square Park. Then they set the terms of debate, breaking the group into three circles: those who wanted to occupy and possibly get arrested, those who wanted there to be an occupation and would assist those being arrested, and those who wanted to build the movement in other ways. I went with the third group….
My advocacy for radical democracy wasn’t particularly popular. Ironically, the predominantly middle-class, white men leading the movement claim that their hostility to democracy is in the interest of “protecting minorities,” referring to oppressed genders, races, classes, ages, and nations. Far from being “minorities,” these people make up the majority of the world’s population; the worldwide outcry for democracy vitiates the paternalistic notion that the oppressed need “protection.” http://fritztucker.blogspot.com/2011/11/american-autumn-pt-3.html
PEACEFUL REVOLUTION = CONTROLLED OPPOSITION
The nation’s attitude toward militarism may lead to violence. An annual Gallup Poll consistently finds that the public thinks that the military is the most competent institution in American society.
Idolization or adoration can lead to emulation.
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” -John F Kennedy
Before watching I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I was actually going to side with the police by saying he was disobeying an order, but he asked if it was okay and received no response. Then they opened fire. Not cool.
Why would you side with the police? They have done nothing but abuse their powers since the beginning of all the occupy events, we the people are allowed to have peaceful protests, and by removing that right its only a matter of time before America goes into anarchy.
Did you read what he said? He isn’t siding with the police. He originally thought it must have been one bad officer disobeying an order, but changed his mind after watching the video
No, Calm Down, the “he” in Jake’s statement is the camera man. “he asked if it was ok.” Jake is saying that he was going to side with the police because he assumed the camera man was disobeying an order by the police officers.
“I was actually going to side with the police by saying he was disobeying an order”
Nope. He was siding with the police originally.
While I would in no way excuse this behaviour, the suddenness of it (and the increasing volume of voices behind the cameraman) make me wonder if he somehow got in the way of someone behind him whom the cop was actually aiming at. A stretch given the distance between the police and anyone else but there’s almost always another side to the story.
“This faggot hippie was filming me and it made me feel ashamed to be intimidating the citizens I’m supposed to protect, so I shot his stupid ass to make myself feel better.”
No. There isn’t another side. This is inexcusable.
Besides this video, has this person taken any pictures of the wound he received? I have checked his Twitter feed, and seen none. I don’t want to say he is faking, but as someone who has followed the Sea Shepherds, I know that some people will openly lie to get their message/cause sympathy. I am reminded of when Paul Watson was “shot”. Paul has advocated lying to the media in many books because the lie gets the headline and the correction gets a small box on the inside of the paper.
That cop should be fired and prosecuted for assault. Police are not immune from prosecution for acts of violence that are not at all reasonably related to the performance of their official duties. Shooting that cameraman with a rubber bullet had no possible reasonable nexus to the performance of lawful police duties.
Oakland PD’s policy manual re: civil disturbances details the circumstances in which less than lethal force may be used. On November 3-4 overnight, this policy was completely disregarded. Oakland PD are not much more than a gang of thugs masquerading as civil servants.
Welcome to the Fascist States of America!
And that f’n mayor sits back all sad; she ordered, she fails to own it or truly apologize and she fails to fire the police chief. Any police officer off work? No.
I am so saddened by seeing what they did to the people’s camera man. he was getting out of the way, though not necessary by law nor the situation, then they hit him. Seeing the smoke from the gun that fired on him is alarming! WTF.
